The Taste of Christmas

the taste of xmas

Can you imagine a world in which we have no sense of taste, smell, touch, sight or hearing? What a pity to not be able to smell the aroma of gingerbread cookies baking in the oven, to taste the sweet minty flavour of a candy cane, to hear the festive Christmas music playing in the malls, to see the bright and beautiful fairy lights glisten on a rainy December night, or to even feel the warmth of a hug from a loved one!

Essentially, we all know that these senses are our link to the world around us! One of the most popular senses that everyone would agree on or even love is of course, the sense of Taste. And that is what we will be focusing on in this article: the taste of Christmas! To kickstart this sensory experience, let’s focus on an iconic dessert that is well loved and welcomed at any Christmas dinner—The Log Cake!

The History of The Log Cake

Christmas-Group-1x1-2

Ever wondered how did log-shaped cakes become a trend during the Christmas season? Well, our story began in France, where the log cake was known as a traditional yule log cake (or bûche de Noël as the French would say), with its history dating back from a long time ago with pagan rituals.

In the olden days, there was a pagan custom whereby people would have a massive log placed in the fireplace on the occasion of the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, to keep warm. The log was always blessed to protect the house and its inhabitants. Gradually, it was then burned for the special occasion that is Christmas Eve.

Until today, people still burn these logs for a warm and cozy setting in their houses. But in a technologically advanced society such as Singapore’s, our modern homes are no longer in need for wooden logs to keep warm. Thus, instead of acting as a source of heat, the use of logs evolved into decorative pieces we use around our houses or as a centrepiece for our dinner tables. Some logs were also hallowed out and stashed with candy, dried fruit, cookies, gingerbread and even small toys sometimes. Soon enough, these trendy wooden logs inspired the baking industry to shape and create our beloved log cakes!

Exploring The Flavours of Christmas

Now that we’ve established our cake history, let’s talk about flavours! What flavours remind you of Christmas? What immediately comes to mind would normally be: cinnamon, peppermint, nutmeg, vanilla and so many more! But what is the one thing that we can’t miss out on? Chocolate! Known as the dominant flavour of Christmas, we believe that chocolate is a must-have regardless of what dessert choice you make when celebrating this festive season!

Diving deeper into the topic of flavours, let’s explore how just simply tasting a bite of a delicious vanilla cake or sipping a nice cup of hot chocolate can bring us to moments we keep in our hearts and experiences we can never forget! According to The Harvard University Press on John S. Allen’s The Omnivorous Mind, “Food is an effective trigger of deeper memories of feelings and emotions, internal states of the mind and body”. How fascinating! Here at Bake Inc we live by our belief in honouring timeless traditions through the generations, and one important factor in making that belief a reality is ensuring that the taste of our pastries leave an impact on the lives of both the young and the old! As you make a purchase from us, we hope that you don’t remember the taste of our pastries just because you’ve bought it before. But it’s because back in our younger days, we all remember the fond memories and the experiences that we had enjoying this pastry. It could be as simple as a sugar doughnut or lets say even a bite from a Christmas log cake!
